Baseball Hits Four Homers to Help Down WPI, 14-7

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (22-10, 7-6 NEWMAC) traveled to WPI (13-19, 1-10 NEWMAC) for the first game of their series and exploded for 14 runs in a convincing 14-7 victory over the Engineers on Tuesday afternoon from the NEBC.

How it Happened
  • After WPI scored a run in the bottom of the first before graduate student Anthony LoCasto singled to right field and drove home graduate student Ryan Caulfield in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1.
  • First-year Robby Roth retired the side in order in the second and in the top of the third, junior Dom Mariani drove in a run and graduate student Billy Sullivan stole home to push the lead to 3-1.
  • WPI rattled off three runs in the third before LoCasto belted a two-run homer and Sullivan hit a two-run bomb in the top of the fourth to extend the advantage to 7-4.
  • Junior Tommy Flaherty entered the game in relief in the fourth and retired the side in order and held WPI scoreless in the fifth.
  • The Cougars added five runs in the sixth as senior Carter Doran hot a leadoff homer, Caulfield drove in a pair of runs, and sophomore Michael Salzillo recorded a pair of RBI's as Clark led 12-4.
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer entered the game in the seventh and allowed no runs in the inning and eighth before Clark added two more runs with a two-run homer from Salzillo as the Cougars came away with a 14-7 victory.

  • Salzillo recorded two hits, including a homer, scored a run, and drove in four.
  • LoCasto belted a homer, three hits, three RBI's, and two runs scored.
  • Doran tallied three hits, a homer, three runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • Sullivan stole four bases, scored three runs, homered, and drove in two runs.
  • Flaherty tossed three innings of no-hit baseball and struck out two batters.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will play their second game of the week tomorrow when they travel to Western New England for a road contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
