Bats Come Alive Late in 14-4 Crosstown Victory Over WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (24-12, 8-6 NEWMAC) played their final home game of the regular season and closed out their crosstown series against WPI (14-22, 2-12 NEWMAC) with a convincing 14-4 victory the Engineers on Tuesday afternoon.  

How it Happened
  • WPI took a 1-0 off a two-out homer from Tommy Burns and in the bottom of the first, junior Michael Soares hit a sacrifice fly to center field that plated senior Carter Doran to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer tossed a scoreless second before the Engineers plated two runs off RBI's from Matt Shea and Jack Zawacki to take a 3-1 edge.
  • Clark chipped into the lead with a sacrifice fly off a ball from junior Dom Mariani that scored graduate student Billy Sullivan to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • Chuck Capello belted a homer to left field off junior Tommy Flaherty in the fourth before Flaherty tossed a scoreless fifth, sixth, and seventh inning as the Engineers held a 4-2 lead.
  • Clark's offense exploded in the seventh inning for seven runs with two outs as Soares hit an RBI double, junior Brayden Hollinrake and junior Alfonso Jalil drove in runs before graduate student Anthony LoCasto belted a grand slam to left center as the Cougars took a 9-4 advantage.
  • Senior Connor Schmautz entered the game in the eighth and got out of a second and third base jam with no outs before the offense ended the contest with five runs in the bottom of the inning as graduate student Ryan Caulfield, Hollinrake, and sophomore Michael Salzillo all picked up RBI's as the scarlet and white prevailed 14-4.
Inside the Stats
  • LoCasto belted a grand slam.
  • Hollinrake drove in three runs and reached base three times.
  • Doran and Sullivan each scored two runs and stole three bases.
  • Flaherty tossed 4.2 innings, struck out five batters, and only allowed one run.
  • Schmautz recorded a scoreless inning.

The Cougars will close out the regular season with a doubleheader at MIT on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
