Baseball Takes Game One 9-7 in Series Against MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (25-12, 9-6 NEWMAC) traveled to MIT (15-18, 10-5 NEWMAC) for their first game of a two-game series and rallied late to come away with a 9-7 victory on Thursday afternoon from Fran O'Brien Field.

How it Happened
  • Senior Carter Doran, junior Dom Mariani, and graduate student Ryan Caulfield all reached base in the top of the first before the Engineers got out of the bases loaded jam.
  • MIT hit a pair of homers in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead before graduate student Casey Gorczyca tossed a scoreless second inning.
  • Junior Michael Soares singled in the third and Gorczyca threw another scoreless inning before the Engineers hit a homer in the fourth to push their edge to 4-0.
  • Clark rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth as Mariani roped a three-RBI double to left field and Caulfield hit an RBI double that brought home Mariani.
  • MIT took the lead back at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double before junior Brayden Hollinrake drove in a pair of runs in the seventh to give the Cougars their first lead of the game at 6-5.
  • Sophomore Brendan Bruun tossed a scoreless seventh and in the eighth, Soares recorded an RBI single to bring home graduate student Anthony LoCasto to push the lead to 7-5.
  • MIT was able to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run blast before LoCasto and sophomore Michael Salzillo tallied RBI's in the ninth to make it a 9-7 contest.
  • First-year Danny Goodman recorded the first out of the ninth before first-year Robby Roth closed the door on the Engineers with the final two outs of the game to help earn a 9-7 win.

  • Mariani recorded three RBI's, three runs, and two hits.
  • Hollinrake tallied three hits, two RBI's, and a run scored.
  • Soares, Caulfield, LoCasto, and Salzillo also drove in runs.
  • Bruun earned the win with 3.0 innings pitched and only allowed one hit.
  • Roth picked up the save with 0.2 innings pitched.
