NEWPORT, R.I. – The Clark University baseball team (16-8, 3-4 NEWMAC) traveled to Salve Regina (14-7, 3-3 NEWMAC) for their first of a two-game series and jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Cougars prevailed 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon from Reynolds Field.
How it Happened
- First-year Robby Roth tossed a scoreless first and second before Clark's offense exploded for four runs in the top of the third as senior Carter Doran and junior Alfonso Jalil scored off an error and junior Dom Mariani belted a two-RBI double to right center.
- After Salve plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, sophomore Michael Salzillo recorded an RBI double and Doran drove in a pair of runs with a single to right center as the scarlet and white extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the fourth.
- Junior Tommy Flaherty got out of a first and second jam in the fourth before Salve cut into the lead with a homer in the bottom of the fifth.
- The Seahawks scored two more runs in the sixth to cut it to 7-5 before Mariani belted a two-RBI double to right center that scored junior Michael Soares and Salzillo to push the lead back to four at 9-5.
- Graduate student Benjamin Spencer closed the door on Salve in the ninth despite allowing a pair of runs as he forced a fielder's choice with two outs as the Cougars recorded a 9-7 victory.
