Baseball Falls to MIT in Regular Season Finale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (25-13, 9-7 NEWMAC) closed out the regular season with a road contest at MIT (16-18, 11-5 NEWMAC) and led through six innings before the Engineers plated three runs in the seventh as they fell 8-6 on Saturday from Fran O'Brien Field.

How it Happened
  • Senior Carter Doran was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from graduate student Billy Sullivan, and stole third before the Engineers got out of the inning.
  • MIT belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead and added another run in the second to extend their edge to 4-0.
  • The Cougars tied the game up at 4-4 in the third inning as sophomore Michael Salzillo scored on a wild pitch, junior Dom Mariani singled to bring home Doran, junior Brayden Hollinrake and senior Tyler Jones also tallied RBI's.
  • Junior Tommy Flaherty tossed a scoreless third before Clark took the lead with runs scored by Salzillo and Sullivan off a ball hit by Mariani as the Cougars held a 6-4 advantage.
  • MIT got a run back in the fourth before Flaherty allowed no runs in the fifth and junior Michael Soares retired the side in order in the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Engineers scored three runs to take the lead and Sullivan reached base before stealing second, but was left on base to end the inning.
  • Sophomore Brendan Bruun retired the side in order in the eighth and in ninth, graduate student Ryan Caulfield walked and reached second before the Engineers recorded the final three outs of the contest.
Inside the Stats
  • Mariani drove in a pair of runs, tallied two hits, and scored a run.
  • Salzillo also recorded two RBI's, scored two runs, and stole two bases.
  • Hollinrake and Jones both drove in runs.
  • Flaherty tossed 3.0 innings and allowed no earned runs.
  • Bruun added 2.0 shutout innings.
What's Next
The Cougars will open up the NEWMAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon and are awaiting the results of the second Babson vs. Springfield game to find out who/where they are playing.
