Women's Soccer Begins NEWMAC Play With 3-3 Draw at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's soccer (3-1-2, 0-0-1 NEWMAC) traveled down Park Ave to open NEWMAC action against WPI (4-2-2, 0-0-1 NEWMAC) and played to a 3-3 tie in an entertaining game from Rooftop Field.

How it Happened
  • Clark jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Georgia Louis passed across the box to senior Emma Shaughnessy, with Shaughnessy finding the back of the net in the lower right corner in the ninth minute.
  • The Cougars added their second goal of the match when first-year Calabria Augustino sent a through ball down the left side of the pitch that found sophomore Solimar Rivera and Rivera put the ball in as Clark held a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute.
  • Graduate student Saige Frazier stopped Aliza Margolis' shot in the 25th minute and sophomore Georgia Louis nearly pushed the lead to three with a shot six minutes later that was saved by Ayla Verheul.
  • The Engineers cut the deficit to one in the 37th minute as Tiziri Tizi-Ougdal found the back of the net off a feed from Aliza Margolis.
  • WPI tied the game at 2-2 in the 60th minute as Maeve Steckley scored off a rebound from Madisen McLeod's blocked shot.
  • Shaughnessy, Louis, and first-year Fotini Grontzos all created chances over a five-minute stretch in the second half before sophomore Madeleine Reeves put the Cougars ahead 3-2 in the 85th minute as she fired a shot from outside the box that got past Maya Mussel.
  • Less than 0:40 later, the Engineers tied the match back up at 3-3 as Reese Pszenny fired a shot that got past Frazier and Reeves created the final chance of the match with a shot off a corner that was blocked as the teams played to a 3-3 draw.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark recorded 12 shots (five on target), earned six corner kicks, and drew six fouls.
  • Shaughnessy netted her third goal of the season and sixth as a Cougar.
  • Louis tallied her fifth assist of the year and ninth of her career.
  • Rivera registered her fifth goal as a Cougar.
  • Augustino picked up her third career assist.
  • Reeves netted her first goal of the season and second of her career.
  • Frazier recorded two saves.

The scarlet and white will return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Williams to Granger for a contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
