Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw Against WNE in Home Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's soccer (2-0-1) hosted their first home game of the season when they welcomed WNE (1-1-1) to Granger and played to a 1-1 draw against the Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
  • The Cougars applied early pressure on WNE's backline as sophomore Solimar Rivera created a pair of chances that were stopped before sophomore Georgia Louis collected a bouncing ball in the Golden Bear backline, dribbled past the goalie, and found the back of the net to put Clark up 1-0 in the 19th minute.
  • Junior Gabrielle Huryn stopped her first shot of the match in the 24th minute off the foot of Ella Lupo before Louis and first-year Lillie DeMetrick fired shots on target that were saved.
  • Sophomore Delaney Schappert and first-year Kory Lloyd also attempted shots on goal before the break that were saved by Ainsley Napolitano as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the half.
  • Senior Emma Shaughnessy and Louis created chances within the first six minutes of the second half, while Rivera fired a shot from the left side of the box that hit the crossbar as Clark continued to dominate possession.
  • In the 68th minute, Louis serviced in a corner kick that was headed by first-year Calabria Augustino and was nearly in the net before Abigail Alicandro recorded a defensive save for the Golden Bears.
  • Lloyd hit the crossbar off the ensuing corner that was sent in by Augustino before Huryn recorded a save in the 72nd minute.
  • Junior Sadie Cohen nearly pushed the edge to two in the 82nd minute with a shot attempt that was saved by Napolitano before the Golden Bears tied the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute when Natalia Estrada Rangel found the back of the net off a corner sent in by Emma Whithington.
  • The Cougars earned one more corner kick in the 86th minute that was serviced in by Augustino and sophomore Madeleine Reeves sent the shot high as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

  • Clark recorded 28 shots (11 on target), earned eight corners, and drew five fouls.
  • Louis scored her third goal of the year and ninth as a Cougar, while leading the team with eight shot attempts.
  • Rivera tallied six shot attempts, with two going on target.

  • First-year Priscilla Miranda, senior Jayme Brown, and Louis each logged over 80 minutes played.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the pitch on Wednesday night when they travel to Brandeis for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
