Women's Basketball Opens NEWMAC Play With Thrilling 62-61 Victory Over MIT

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's basketball team (10-5, 1-0 NEWMAC) opened conference play against MIT (5-9, 0-1 NEWMAC) with a thrilling 62-61 victory led by clutch free throws down the stretch from first-year Atiya Watson on Saturday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars started the game on an 18-0 run over the first five minutes of action sparked by six points from Watson, four from junior Catherine Antwi, three from junior Emma Drefs, three from junior Kailey Rios, and two from junior Olivia Shipley before Olivia Joseph ended the Clark run with a made layup.
  • Shipley, Drefs, and Watson added Clark's final six points of the first quarter as the Cougars took a 24-10 advantage into the second.
  • Riley O'Sullivan scored the first three points of the second before sophomore Cyriah Coleman connected on a triple to push the lead back to 14, but O'Sullivan netted the next four points to make it a 27-17 contest with 6:57 to go.
  • Coleman and O'Sullivan exchanged a pair of free throws before Rios hit a three-pointer and Coleman scored the Cougars final points of the half as Clark led 34-25 heading into the locker room.
  • Drefs pushed the lead back up to double-digits at 36-25 with a made layup before MIT rattled off five straight points to cut the deficit to 36-30 with 6:20 to go in the third.
  • Clark responded with a 10-0 run sparked by five points from senior Kiley Drezek, two from first-year Leilani Benson and Watson, and a made Coleman free throw helped the Cougars take a 46-30 advantage, but the Engineers scored seven unanswered to end the third as they trailed 46-37.
  • MIT scored the first four points of the fourth before Shipley and Coleman netted the next four points as Clark led 50-41.
  • O'Sullivan and Benson traded the next four points and a layup from Drezek with 4:56 remaining made it a 55-48 contest.
  • MIT scored the next four points before Watson made a layup to push the lead back to five, but the Engineers scored the next seven points as they led 59-57 with 0:53 to go.
  • Watson made a layup the next possession to tie the game at 59-59 and with 0:22 remaining, Mary Lobon made a layup to make it a 61-59 contest.
  • Watson drew a pair of fouls down the stretch and went 3-4 from the line to give Clark a 62-61 lead with 0:02 remaining and O'Sullivan missed a layup at the buzzer to help the Cougars clinch a 62-61 victory.

  • Clark made 23 shots, grabbed 39 rebounds, dished out 14 assists, and forced 29 turnovers.
  • Watson led the way with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
  • Coleman also reached double-figures with 10 points and added five rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
  • Shipley tallied a team-high four blocks and added six points.
