Men's Soccer Battle to 1-1 Draw at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Clark University men's soccer team (3-6-6, 1-3-3 NEWMAC) traveled west to face Springfield (5-7-3, 2-3-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday for a late-season NEWMAC battle. The Cougars struck first in the opening half, but the Pride responded early in the second half to even the score at 1-1. Neither team found a winner over the final 37 minutes as the match ended in a draw.

How it Happened

  • Both teams traded errant shots early, with sophomore Shahmeer Waseem recording the first shot on goal of the game in the ninth minute.

  • First-year Roland Soeiro added a shot on goal of his own in the 17th minute, followed by a blocked attempt in the 23rd minute.

  • The Cougars broke through in the 33rd minute when senior Jaime Pedraza launched a ball from just outside his own 18-yard box that landed in the opposite box for senior Kofi Poku. Poku evaded a defender and the goalkeeper to create space for an easy finish and put Clark in front.

  • Pedraza made his first save in the 35th minute on what proved to be the final shot on goal of the half, sending the Cougars into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

  • The Pride quickly equalized in the second half, scoring seven minutes after the break through Cole Sampson, assisted by Evan Memoli.

  • The match remained back-and-forth for the rest of the half, with Pedraza making a key save in the 84th minute before Poku put a shot on target moments later that was saved by Springfield.

  • Those proved to be the final two chances of the match as the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle.
