WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University men's basketball team (12-11, 7-7 NEWMAC) hosted Wheaton (15-7, 8-5 NEWMAC) on Wednesday night and senior
Reid Neumann reached the 1,000-point club, but the Lyons prevailed 80-65 from the Kneller Gymnasium.
Neumann became the 33rd player in program history to join the 1,000-point club with his 13 points in the game.
Wheaton's Dimetri Iafrate also hit 1,000 career points in the contest for the Lyons.
How it Happened
- The Cougars trailed 12-8 over the first four minutes of action despite sophomore Boluwasefe John netting six points and a jumper from first-year Aliaun Iscandari.
- John scored Clark's next four points before first-year Elijah Small hit a jumper with 13:15 to go in the half as the scarlet and white were down 18-14.
- Wheaton scored the next six points of the contest as both Sal Pedevillano and Iafrate each hit triples before Iscandari connected on a three-pointer with 11:46 remaining.
- After another Iafrate layup pushed the lead to nine, Clark rallied with nine unanswered as Small scored six points and Neumann hit a triple to tie the game at 26-26.
- Wheaton scored seven straight points before junior Malik Matanmi and Iscandari each scored to get back within four, but Iafrate connected on a pair of free throws to reach his 1,000th career point as the Lyons led 35-29.
- After trailing by eight, Neumann reached the 1,000-point plateau with a made triple with 3:57 remaining in the half before three free throws from junior Christopher Clarke cut the deficit to 37-35.
- Small and Clarke each scored before the break, with Clarke's layup coming at the buzzer to make it a 41-39 game in favor of the visitors.
- Wheaton opened the second half on an 8-2 run, with the Cougar bucket coming from Neumann before three free throws from Iscandari to pull back within five at 49-44.
- Iafrate and Tristan Herry combined for the next nine points of the game before sophomore Kyle Squires hit a triple and a layup from Matanmi made it a 60-49 contest with 13:21 remaining.
- Clarke and Neumann combined for Clark's next five points, but Wheaton rattled off eight points before John threw down a dunk off a feed from as the Cougars trailed 68-56 with 9:17 to play.
- Iscandari made a layup to get Clark to as close as 11, but the Lyons pulled away despite seven points combined from Neumann and John down the stretch as Wheaton won 80-65.
