Women's Basketball Ends Regular Season With Loss at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's basketball team (17-8. 8-3 NEWMAC) closed out their 2025-26 with a matchup down Park Ave against WPI (15-10, 6-5 NEWMAC) and fell 53-33 to the Engineers on Saturday afternoon from Harrington Auditorium.

No. 3 Clark will return to the court on Wednesday night when they host No. 6 WPI in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be the first home NEWMAC playoff game for the Cougars since the 2011-12 season when they also hosted WPI.

How it Happened
  • First-year Atiya Watson gave Clark an early 2-0 lead with a made layup before WPI rattled off nine straight points and first-year Leilani Benson scored to cut the deficit to 9-4.
  • WPI's Ava Giansiracusa netted the final three points of the first to push their edge to eight before the Cougars opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run sparked by three points from both sophomore Cyriah Coleman and junior Kailey Rios and two from junior Olivia Shipley and first-year Atiya Watson gave Clark a 14-12 advantage.
  • Both defenses controlled the tempo in the first half as over the remainder of the second quarter Watson and Coleman combined for three points as the teams entered the locker room tied at 17-17.
  • Watson hit a pair of free throws to open the third and after six unanswered points by the Engineers, junior Emma Drefs made a layup as Clark trailed 23-21.
  • After a triple from Giansiracusa, Drefs scored the next four points of the game and before the end of the quarter Watson and Coleman added a combined three points as the Cougars trailed 31-28 entering the fourth quarter.
  • WPI pushed their lead to nine with made triples from Leila Neilsen and Giansiracusa before Watson made a layup to cut the deficit to seven with 6:17 to go.
  • Shipley made a layup and senior Kiley Drezek made a free throw down the stretch, but the Engineers pulled away from Clark to earn a 53-33 victory.
