Baseball Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Massachusetts Maritime

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University Baseball (6-2) hosted Massachusetts Maritime Academy (4-3) in the home-opening game for the Cougars. The Buccaneers used a seven run seventh inning to gain a six-run lead, surviving a late run from Clark for a 14-12 final.

How it Happened

  • After a hitless first inning, the Cougars struck first in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a leadoff triple from sophomore Myles Fournier. Fournier came around to score the opening run on a single from sophomore Bennett Hewett to make it 1-0.

  • The Buccaneers answered in the third, getting two runners on via walks before moving them to second and third on a wild pitch. Both runners scored on a single from Damon White to give Massachusetts Maritime a 2-1 lead.

  • The advantage was short-lived as Clark responded in the bottom of the inning. Senior Michael Soares and Fournier each drew walks, and a single by sophomore Cole Camara loaded the bases. Soares scored on an error to tie the game, before a double from Hewett brought home Fournier and Camara to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead.

  • After a pair of scoreless innings, the Buccaneers capitalized on two errors in the sixth, plating three runs to take a one-run lead. They added another run in the seventh on a solo home run from Colsen Loughren to make it 6-4.

  • Clark answered in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on a single from senior Dom Mariani and walks from Soares and Fournier. Sophomore Cole Camara then took full advantage, crushing a grand slam into the trees in left-center field to give Clark an 8-6 lead with one swing of the bat.

  • The eighth inning swung the lead again, as Massachusetts Maritime recorded six hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, resulting in seven runs and a 13-8 advantage.

  • The Buccaneers added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI double from Michael Logiudice to extend the lead to six.

  • Clark battled in the final inning, with Fournier scoring on a wild pitch before Camara and Hewett came home on a two-RBI single from senior Alfonso Jalil. Jalil later scored on an error to bring Clark within two.

  • However, a hard-hit ball to center field by the next batter was caught to end the game, giving Massachusetts Maritime a 14-12 win.
