Baseball Bested by Amherst in Extra Innings

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (6-3) battled with Amherst (3-1) for 10 innings and fell 15-10 to the Mammoth on Thursday night from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Amherst scored two runs in the first inning before senior Brayden Hollinrake drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field that plated junior Michael Salzillo and senior Michael Soares to tie the game at 2-2.
  • After Amherst scored a run in the second, junior Brendan Bruun got the first two outs of the third before sophomore Taejun Tow struck out the final batter of the inning.
  • Tow tossed a scoreless fourth and fifth before Salzillo belted a homer to left center to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Tow went 1-2-3 in the sixth before senior Alfonso Jalil belted a three-run homer to left that scored sophomore Bennett Hewett and Hollinrake to give the Cougars a 6-3 edge.
  • Amherst rattled off seven runs in the seventh and in the bottom half, Soares homered to left that plated senior Dom Mariani, Hollinrake hit an RBI double, and sophomore Brad Andreola scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 10-10.
  • Graduate student Connor Schmautz pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth before Amherst plated five runs in the top of the 10th.
  • Jalil and Salzillo each drew walks in the bottom of the 10th, but were left on base as the Cougars fell 15-10.
Inside the Stats
  • Hollinrake and Jalil each tied for the team-high with three RBI's as Jalil belted a homer.
  • Soares drove in a pair of runs, homered, and scored two runs.
  • Salzillo hit a homer, stole a base and scored a pair of runs.
  • Tow tossed 3.1 scoreless innings and only allowed two hits.
  • Schmautz pitched 2.2 innings and only allowed two runs.

The scarlet and white will return to the field on Saturday afternoon when they welcome NEC to Granger for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
