WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University Baseball (8-3) welcomed New England College (NEC) (2-9) for a weekend double-header at Granger field. The Cougars used a strong all-around effort to win 7-0 in game one before a dominant offensive performance in game two led to a 23-0 win, concluding the pair of wins on the day.
How it Happened (Game One)

The Cougars struck quickly as the first two hitters, sophomore Bennett Hewett and senior Dom Mariani, each hit doubles, with Mariani's bringing home Hewett to make it 1-0.

Hewett singled home senior Alfonso Jalil in the second for another run before scoring himself later in the inning on a single from senior Michael Soares to make it a three-run lead.

Senior Brayden Hollinrake made it three straight innings with a run, singling to lead off the third before advancing to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scoring on a fielding error to make it 4-0.

Soares then extended the lead to six runs with one swing of the bat, crushing a two-run home run over the wall, scoring himself alongside Mariani, who had singled earlier in the frame.

After a scoreless fifth, Hollinrake drew a walk and scored all the way from first on a triple from first-year Cole Miller, setting the score at 7-0 entering the final inning.

First-year Theodore Allan finished off the combined shutout, allowing just one baserunner in the final inning before closing out the 7-0 win.
Inside the Box Score (Game One)

Clark recorded ten hits, four for extra bases, drew four walks, and allowed only four hits on the mound while committing just a single error in the field.

Hewett dominated in the leadoff spot, going three-for-four with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI.

Soares hit his seventh home run of the season, tying the all-time program single-season record in only ten games played.

Mariani recorded two hits, including a double, while adding an RBI and a run.

Sophomore Robby Roth got the start, pitching three one-hit innings with two strikeouts.

Junior Chas Caron pitched an inning, picking up his first collegiate win on the mound. He has yet to allow a run through 2.1 innings so far this season.

How it Happened (Game Two)

Clark picked up where they left off in game one, with Soares and sophomore Cole Camara drawing walks to get on base before a double from sophomore Myles Fournier scored them both to make it 2-0 after the first.

Two more runs would be added in the second as junior Michael Salzillo launched a two-run shot over the left-center field wall, scoring himself and Caron to make it 4-0.

The Cougars would blow the game open in the third, starting with a single by first-year Caleb Winkley to score Camara. After a single from Caron loaded the bases, a following double from junior Joseph Winakor would plate two more runners. Then both remaining runners would score as Salzillo ripped a triple to center field. Salzillo would score the final run of the inning on a double by Hewett to make it 10-0 after the third.

Clark would add six more runs in the fourth, with Camara scoring again, this time off an error to start the scoring. Then Winakor would top his double, this time clearing the wall for a three-run home run. Later in the inning, senior Jake Faulkenham and Salzillo would score off an error to make it 16-0 after four innings.

The Cougars would one-up themselves in the fifth, scoring seven runs beginning with a grand slam by Salzillo, his second homer of the game, scoring Winakor, Caron, Ullman, and himself to add four more runs. Later in the inning it would be senior Nicolo Mainardi's turn to launch one over the wall, with his three-run shot scoring himself, sophomore Roberts Galvis, and Faulkenham to make it 23-0 after five.

From there the game would remain scoreless, with first-year Luke Costello slamming the door shut with two strikeouts in the final inning to close out the win for the Cougars.
Inside the Box Score (Game Two)

Salzillo was unstoppable, recording four hits including two home runs and a triple, leading to eight RBI and four runs. He is now up to three homers on the season.

Winakor was also a menace at the dish, tallying three hits that led to five RBI and three runs. He also hit a home run, the first of his career, and doubled in the effort.

Camara had two hits and three RBI.

Mainardi also homered for the first time in his career in the win.

Junior Jacob Kline was stellar on the mound, pitching 4.0 hitless innings with six strikeouts as he picked up his first win of the season.

Junior Matthew Maloney (one strikeout), first-year Andrew Mello (three strikeouts), and Costello (two strikeouts) each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the shutout.
