Baseball Drops Road Game at Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Clark University baseball team (8-4) played their first road contest of the season against Mitchell (6-4) and were bested 22-8 by the Mariners on Tuesday afternoon from Alumni Field.  

How it Happened
  • Sophomore Bennett Hewett and senior Dom Mariani each reached base in the top of the first before fellow sophomore Cole Camara registered an RBI that brought home Hewett as Clark led 1-0.
  • Sophomore Robby Roth retired Mitchell in order in the bottom of the first before the Mariners plated two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Senior Michael Soares hit a ball to third base that brought home Hewett to tie the game at two, but Mitchell scored two runs in the bottom of the third to regain a 4-2 advantage.
  • Sophomore Miles Fournier, junior Chas Caron, and junior Michael Salzillo all reached base in the top of the fourth before Andrew Manzo got out of the jam.
  • After three Mariner runs in the fourth, Mariani belted a homer to left center to cut the deficit to 7-3 going into the bottom half.
  • Mitchell scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and six in the bottom of the sixth before Mariani scored on an error, Soares drove in a run, senior Brayden Hollinrake registered an RBI, and both Hollinrake and Camara scored to make it a 17-8 contest.
  • First-year Tyler Hansen tossed a scoreless eighth for Clark, but the Cougars fell 22-8.

  • Mariani registered two hits, including a homer and scored two runs.
  • Hollinrake drove in a pair of runs and scored.
  • Camara tallied two hits, was hit by pitch, scored a run, and registered an RBI.
  • Soares and Fournier also recorded RBI's.
  • Hewett scored a team-high three runs and drew two walks.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to action tomorrow when they welcome St. Joe's (Me.) to Granger for a contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
