Baseball Rallies Late to Top St. Joe's (Me.), 9-8

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (9-4) rallied in the seventh inning to help earn a 9-8 victory over St. Joe's Me. (12-3) on Wednesday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Junior Jacob Kline retired the side in order in the top of the first and in the bottom of the inning sophomore Bennett Hewett and senior Michael Soares each drew walks, but were left on base.
  • Kline tossed a 1-2-3 second before junior Chas Caron singled through the right side with two outs and stole second and junior Michael Salzillo drew a walk, but the Monks got out of the jam.
  • In the top of the third, Kline's no-hitter was broken by a base hit to right and got out of the inning.
  • Soares roped a double to left field and sophomore Cole Camara battled to draw a walk in the bottom of the third before sophomore Miles Fournier singled through the left side to bring home Soares as Clark led 1-0.
  • The Cougars plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Mariani, Soares, senior Brayden Hollinrake, and Fournier all registered RBI's with two outs as they pushed their lead to 5-0.
  • After the Monks scored a run in the fifth, junior Brendan Bruun forced a double play to end the inning and in the sixth, Bruun retired the side in order.
  • Soares and Camara each reached base in the bottom of the sixth, but were left on base and in the top of the seventh, sophomore Taejun Tow recorded two outs and first-year Theodore Allan registered the final out of the inning as the Monks took a 6-5 edge.
  • Hewett and Mariani drove in runs in the seventh as Clark regained the lead at 7-6 before Allan tossed a scoreless eighth.
  • Hewett tallied two more RBI's in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to right that plated first-year Michael Benway and Caron to give the Cougars a 9-6 advantage.
  • Graduate student Connor Schmautz earned the save in the ninth after forcing Carlisle, Wilhelm, and Brindle out.
Inside the Stats
  • Hewett led the team with three RBI's, while adding three hits and two runs.
  • Soares went 4-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs, and an RBI.
  • Fournier and Mariani each registered two hits and two RBI's.
  • Caron recorded two runs, a stolen base, and a hit.
  • Kline tossed 4.1 innings, only allowed two hits, one run, and struck out three batters.
  • Schmautz registered his first save of the season.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Castleton to Granger for a contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
