WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University baseball (10-4) welcomed VTSU-Castleton (5-11) to close out its two-game home stretch. The Cougars used strong pitching and a record-setting grand slam by senior Michael Soares to pull away, ultimately securing their second win in as many days, 12-4.
How it Happened
-
The Spartans struck first in the top of the first, using two errors to get a runner on base and bring them home to make it 1-0.
-
The Cougars responded in the third, starting with a double by junior Joseph Winakor to get into scoring position. He would come home for the tying run on an error. Then senior Dom Mariani gave Clark its first lead with a towering three-run blast to make it 4-1 after the third.
-
Following scoreless fourth and fifth innings, VTSU got the scoring started again with a run off three straight singles before plating a second on a double to make it 4-3.
-
The Cougars responded quickly, starting with a single and stolen base by junior Michael Salzillo. Salzillo would then score on a single by Mariani, with Mariani himself coming home a batter later on a double by senior Michael Soares.
-
Clark would blow it open in the seventh, starting with a leadoff single by senior Brayden Hollinrake. Pinch-runner sophomore Brad Andreola stole second immediately after and then scored the first run of the inning on a single from senior Alfonso Jalil.
-
Following a walk and hit-by-pitch to load the bases, sophomore Bennett Hewett also drew a walk, scoring Winakor. The bases were then cleared by the next hitter, as Soares ripped a ball down the left-field line and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to make it 12-3.
-
The Spartans pulled a run back in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, but graduate student Connor Schmautz closed the door from there, recording the final five outs to secure a 12-4 win for the Cougars.
