HARTFORD, Conn. – Clark University baseball (11-5) traveled to Hartford (5-6) for a battle with the Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Hartford took the first game 11-4, but it was the Cougars who controlled game two, cruising to a 7-0 win to split on the day.
How it Happened (Game One)

A sacrifice fly and an RBI single would start the scoring for Hartford in the opening inning. The Hawks would add to their lead in the second, using an RBI double and grounder to score two more runs and make it 4-0.

Another run would be added in the third on an RBI single to make it 5-0 for the Hawks, who would hold onto that lead through a scoreless fourth inning.

Clark would strike for the first time in the fifth, with junior Chas Caron launching his first career home run to open the scoring for the Cougars. Following the solo shot, junior Michael Salzillo and sophomore Bennett Hewett would each get hit by pitches, with a walk from senior Michael Soares loading the bases.

Sophomore Cole Camara would take advantage of his opportunity, singling home Hewett and Salzillo to cut the deficit to 5-3 after five innings.

Hartford would extend their lead to three in the bottom of the frame behind back to back walks and an RBI single before adding two more runs in similar fashion an inning later, this time with a 2-RBI single to make it 8-3 after six.

Senior Dom Mariani would cut the deficit down by a run with a solo home run in the seventh, but again the Hawks would respond, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh behind a sacrifice fly, single, and wild pitch to make it 11-4.

Clark would get runners on in the eighth and ninth but couldn't score as Hartford secured the 11-4 game one victory.

Senior Matthew Donahue closed out the game on the mound, with 1.2 innings of work, allowing just a single hit with two strikeouts.
How it Happened (Game Two)

Hewett opened game two with a leadoff double and later scored the first run of the game on a double from Camara.

Following a one-two-three bottom of the inning from first-year Tyler Hansen, Clark added another run in the second, with a sacrifice fly by Caron scoring first-year Andrew Mello to make it 2-0.

The Cougars made it three straight innings with a run in the third, as Camara led off with a single before stealing second and scoring on an error to make it 3-0.

After a scoreless fourth, the scoring resumed in the fifth, starting with a leadoff walk for first-year Caleb Winkley, who came around to score on a double from junior Joseph Winakor to make it 4-0.

The Cougars added to their lead in the eighth, scoring three more runs on a two-RBI single from senior Alfonso Jalil and an RBI single by Salzillo to make it 7-0.

First-year Luke Costello closed out the game on the mound, allowing just one baserunner in the ninth to finish off the 7-0 win for Clark.

Hansen secured his second win of the season, allowing only four hits in five scoreless innings.

Junior Brendan Bruun added three scoreless innings from the hill, allowing three hits in that span.

Camara recorded three hits, scored once, and had an RBI.

Winakor hit three doubles and also had a run and RBI. He is up to five doubles in just four games played this season, good for third on the team.
