Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Coast Guard With 6-2 Victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Clark University baseball team (13-5, 2-0 NEWMAC) wrapped up their season series against Coast Guard (6-10, 0-4 NEWMAC) and recorded the sweep with a 6-2 victory over the Bears on Tuesday afternoon from Nitchman Field.

How it Happened
  • Senior Michael Soares, sophomore Cole Camara, and senior Brayden Hollinrake all reached base in the top of the first with two outs before the Bears were able to get out of the jam.
  • Junior Jacob Kline tossed a scoreless first and second before Hollinrake registered an RBI single to center field that scored senior Dom Mariani to give Clark a 1-0 advantage.
  • After a 1-2-3 third from Kline, Hewett tripled to right center, but was left on base before the Bears plated a run in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.
  • In the top of the fifth, Hollinrake and sophomore Myles Fournier each registered RBI's with Soares and Camara coming around to score, pushing their advantage to 3-1.
  • Kline tossed a scoreless fifth before Mariani roped a double down the left field line that scored junior Michael Salzillo as the scarlet and white took a 4-1 lead.
  • Coast Guard scored a run in the sixth and junior Chas Caron held them scoreless in the seventh as the Cougars took a 4-2 edge into the eighth.
  • Mariani and Hewett both scored off an error in the top of the eighth to push the lead to 6-2 before senior Matthew Donahue tossed a scoreless bottom half.
  • Sophomore Robby Roth closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth with no runs allowed as Clark prevailed 6-2.
Inside the Stats
  • Hollinrake tallied two hits and a pair of RBI's.
  • Mariani registered three hits, two runs, and an RBI.
  • Junior Joseph Winakor and Soares also added a pair of hits.
  • Kline earned his second win of the year with 5.2 innings pitched and only allowed one run.
  • Caron, Donahue, and Roth combined for 3.1 innings pitched and allowed no runs.
  • This was the first series sweep against the Bears since 2019.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they Saint Joseph's (CT) to Granger for a non-conference contest beginning at 2:30 p.m.
