Baseball Drops Game One, Takes Game Two Against Cornell College

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (5-1) dropped game one and took game two against Cornell (2-3) on Friday from Northeast Regional Park.

Game One: Cornell 7, Clark 4
  • Senior Dom Mariani singled to center in the top of the first and reached second base on an error, but was left on second as Nate Pacetti was able to get out of the inning by striking out the final two hitters of the frame.
  • Junior Jacob Kline got the ball in game one and punched out Jimmy Moltini with two on and two out to keep it a scoreless contest after one inning.
  • Kline tossed a scoreless second before Cornell plated two runs in the bottom of the third and added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
  • Senior Brayden Hollinrake and sophomore Bennett Hewett each reached first on hit by pitches in the fifth before senior Alfonso Jalil brought home Hollinrake to cut the deficit to four runs.
  • Junior Chas Caron hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Hewett as Clark trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the fifth.
  • After Cornell plated two more runs in the fifth, sophomore Cole Camara belted a two-run homer to right field that brought home fellow sophomore Miles Fournier to bring Clark back within three at 7-4.
  • Sophomore Robby Roth tossed a 1-2-3 sixth and in the top of the seventh, junior Michael Salzillo singled through the left side, but was left on base as Cornell registered a 7-4 win.
Game Two: Clark 0, Cornell 0
  • Graduate student Connor Schmautz conceded one run in the first before forcing the final out of the inning and in the bottom half, Salzillo, Mariani, and Fournier all reached base before Camara hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Salzillo to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Schmautz tossed a scoreless second and junior Isaac Hainer singled up the middle in the second before Cornell plated three runs in the top of the third.
  • Soares belted a two-run homer to left after Mariani roped a double to left to bring Clark back within one at 4-3 before Caron drove in a pair of runs and Mariani hit a grand slam to right field in his second at-bat to give the Cougars a 9-4 lead.
  • First-year Tyler Hansen tossed a 1-2-3 fourth before the Cougars scored seven straight runs as Hewett and Salzillo drove in a pair of runs, Soares tallied an RBI, and senior Jake O'Donnell tallied two RBI's to go up 16-4.
  • Clark rattled off five more runs in the fifth as sophomore Christopher Takita hit a two-run homer that plated senior Jake Faulkenham, first-year Tyler Montecalvo singled to right and brought home junior Joseph Winakor, and Camara recorded two RBI's as they led 21-4.
  • Senior Andrew Reder pitched a 1-2-3 seventh as the Cougars prevailed 21-4.
What's Next
Clark will close out their Florida trip when they take on Gwynedd Mercy tomorrow for a contest beginning at 9:15 a.m.
