Baseball Closes Florida Trip With 5-4 Win Against Gwynedd Mercy

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (6-1) rallied in the seventh inning to regain the lead and never looked back as the Cougars registered a 5-4 victory over Gwynedd Mercy (5-2) on Saturday morning from Northeast Regional Park.

How it Happened
  • Senior Dom Mariani singled and stole second to open the first, but was left on base and in the bottom of the first junior Brendan Bruun tossed a scoreless inning capped by a punch out as the teams entered the second scoreless.
  • Sophomore Cole Camara and senior Brayden Hollinrake each reached base in the second before Connor Hafto got out of the jam and Bruun got out of a first and third jam in the bottom of the inning.
  • In the top of the third, junior Chas Caron, junior Michael Salzillo, and Mariani all reached base before senior Michael Soares singled to left and brought home Caron to give Clark a 1-0 advantage.
  • Bruun kept Gwynedd Mercy off the scoreboard again in the third and Caron singled and stole second in the top of the fourth, but Hafto got out of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Bruun retired the Griffins in order and in the top of the fifth Soares and sophomore Miles Fournier each reached base before Hollinrake tallied his 100th career hit to bring home Soares as the Cougars led 2-0.
  • After Gwynedd Mercy allowed a run in the fifth, first-year James Rabbitt struck out a batter and forced an inning-ending double play to keep Clark in front at 2-1.
  • Salzillo drew a walk in the sixth and reached second on a failed pickoff attempt before the Griffins got out of the inning.
  • The Griffins plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth before senior Matthew Donahue registered the final out of the inning and in the top of the seventh, Soares, Fournier, and Camara each walked before sophomore Bennett Hewett roped a two-RBI single to left as the Cougars regained the lead at 4-3.
  • Donahue tossed a 1-2-3 seventh and in the top of the eighth, first-year Cole Miller doubled down the right field line before Gwynedd Mercy got out of the inning.
  • Donahue set the Griffins down in order in the eighth and in the ninth, Mariani registered an RBI single to center field as they pushed their lead to 5-3.
  • After Donahue recorded two outs in the ninth, Caron came in and struck out Deven Ross to give the Cougars a 5-4 victory.
Inside the Stats
  • Hewett registered two RBI's and tallied a pair of hits.
  • Mariani, Soares, and Hollinrake all drove in runs.
  • Soares scored two runs and recorded two hits.
  • Hollinrake recorded his 100th career hit.
  • Bruun tossed 4.0 innings and only allowed one run.
  • Donahue earned his second win of the year after only allowing one run.
  • Caron recorded his first career save after striking out the final batter of the contest.
What's Next
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they welcome Mass. Maritime to Granger for a contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
