Softball Splits NEWMAC Series Against Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (11-10, 1-5 NEWMAC) traveled to Wellesley (11-8, 4-4 NEWMAC) for a pair of conference contests and took game one 4-3 before dropping game two 8-2 to the Blue on Friday afternoon from the Wellesley Softball Field.

Game One: Clark 4, Wellesley 3
  • Junior Charlise Quigley drew a walk in the top of the first and reached second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Avery Dillon, but was left on base.
  • Senior Brooke Buzzeo set down the Blue in order in the bottom of the first before junior Alexis Taudel roped an RBI double to left field that brought home senior Erin Slavin to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • Buzzeo sat down the next three batters in order and in the bottom of the third, Wellesley scored a pair of runs before Clark answered with two runs of their own as senior Felicia Salvati and sophomore Abigail Venis each recorded RBI doubles to give them a 3-2 advantage.
  • Buzzeo tossed a scoreless fourth and after allowing the bases loaded with one out in the fifth, Buzzeo forced a fielder's choice and a lineout to end the inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, Slavin and Salvati each reached base before the Blue got out of the jam and after Wellesley scored a run in the sixth, the Cougars again answered as sophomore Avery Della Piana hit a sacrifice fly that scored junior Charlise Quigley to make it a 4-3 game.
  • Buzzeo finished her complete game in the seventh by retiring three of the final four batters to give the Cougars a 4-3 victory.
Game Two: Wellesley 8, Clark 2
  • A. Dillon and junior Megan Dube each singled in the top of the first, but were left on base before Dube retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning.
  • Venis and senior Emelie Spence each reached base in the second before the Blue got out of the jam again and Dube pitched another scoreless inning.
  • After a 1-2-3 inning from Dube, Salvati drew a walk in the fourth before Wellesley plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Blue added another run in the fifth before Salvati recorded an RBI triple that scored sophomore Merry Griffin and Venis drove home Salvati to make it a 3-2 game.
  • Wellesley's offense plated five runs in the sixth and Clark was unable to reach base in the top of the seventh as the Blue took game two 8-2.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome MIT to Worcester for a pair of NEWMAC games beginning at 12:00 p.m.
