Baseball Splits Senior Day Series Against WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (17-12, 4-6 NEWMAC) hosted their senior day game against WPI (13-16, 2-8 NEWMAC) and after falling 15-5 in game one, took game two 9-5 on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.

Prior to the game, seniors Jake Faulkenham, Jake O'Donnell, Matthew Donahue, Alfonso Jalil, Nicolo Mainardi, Brayden Hollinrake, Andrew Reder, Michael Soares, and Dom Mariani were honored for their contributions to the Clark baseball program.  

Game One: WPI 15, Clark 5 (F/7)
  • After allowing a leadoff single in the first, sophomore Danny Goodman forced a popup and a 6-4-3 double play to end the top half before the Engineers scored off a sacrifice fly from James DiGiovanni in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Jacob Wiberg set the Cougars down in order in the second and in the top of the third Goodman retired the side.
  • Wiberg pitched a scoreless third and in the top of the fourth, Jonathan Lattimer drove in a run and DiGiovanni roped a two-RBI single to center to push WPI's lead to 4-0.
  • Sophomore Bennett Hewett broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center and advanced to third on a balk and came around to score on a two-run homer from sophomore Cole Camara to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • WPI scored six runs in the top of the fifth and Jalil singled in the bottom of the inning, but was left on base.
  • The Engineers added another run in the top of the sixth before Hewett roped a triple to right field and Mariani belted a homer to left field as WPI now led 11-4.
  • Hollirake registered an RBI single to left field that brought home Soares and Hollinrake and Camara each reached third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Joseph Winakor, but reliever Brian Riley was able to get out of the jam as Clark trailed 11-5.
  • WPI rattled off four runs in the seventh and despite a base hit from Hewett, Riley registered the final three outs of the game to earn a 15-5 victory.
Game Two: Clark 9, WPI 5
  • First-year James Rabbitt tossed a scoreless first inning and in the bottom half, Hewett, Mariani, and Soares all reached base before Camara and Hollinrake each registered RBI's to give Clark an early 2-0 lead.
  • Rabbitt pitched a scoreless second inning before the Cougars plated a pair of runs as Hewett and Mariani recorded RBI's to push their edge to 4-0 after two.
  • Rabbitt and Donahue combined for a scoreless third before Donahue also kept the Engineers off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • The Cougars plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Camara and sophomore Myles Fournier each picked up RBI's to push their advantage to 6-0.
  • WPI answered with four runs in the top of the sixth before Salzillo added another run with a triple down the left field line that brought home junior Chas Caron to give Clark a 7-4 lead.
  • After WPI scored a run in the seventh, Soares belted a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning as the Cougars took an 8-5 advantage.
  • Junior Jacob Kline tossed a scoreless eighth before adding another run in the bottom half as Jalil scored on a passed ball to take a 9-5 lead into the ninth.
  • Kline retired the side in order in the ninth as the Cougars took game two 9-5.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field on Tuesday when they travel to the NEBC for a conference contest against Emerson beginning at 3:30 p.m.
