Softball Edged by Smith in Both Games of Doubleheader

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Clark University softball (12-15, 1-9 NEWMAC) resumed NEWMAC play with a trip to Smith (15-13, 7-5 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon. Following a four-run third by Smith in game one, Clark battled back but fell just short, 4-3. The second game followed a similar script, but this time the Bears held onto the shutout, winning 3-0 to secure the sweep.

How it Happened (Game One)

  • The game was scoreless after two innings, with junior Megan Dube striking out two straight hitters to strand a runner at second at the end of the second.

  • The Bears started the scoring in the third, using a double and a single to put two runners in scoring position. A two-RBI double plated both runners, with a single adding a third run. A sacrifice fly concluded the scoring with Smith up 4-0.

  • After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Clark found its breakthrough, with back-to-back singles from senior Felicia Salvati and sophomore Avery Della Piana, before a walk from sophomore Avery Dillon loaded the bases. All three runners, including junior pinch-runner Jennifer Albano, scored on a 3-RBI double from sophomore Gricelda Castro to make it 4-3 after six.

  • The Cougars loaded the bases in the seventh inning off a single from sophomore Merry Griffin, a walk from Salvati, and an error. However, the Bears recorded two outs to hold off the late push and secure the 4-3 win in game one.

How it Happened (Game Two)

  • In similar fashion to game one, the first two innings were scoreless before Smith started the scoring in the third, loading the bases and plating two runs on a single to take a 2-0 lead.

  • Dube and senior Emelie Spence singled in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, but the Cougars were unable to push a run across.

  • The Bears added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, with a single and a walk moving a runner into scoring position, who later scored on another single to make it 3-0.

  • Della Piana singled in the sixth, while Avery Dillon and senior Erin Slavin added hits in the seventh, but no runs came across as Smith secured the sweep with a 3-0 win in game two.

Inside the Box Score (Game 1 & 2)

  • Gricelda Castro led the offense, driving in all three runs for Clark with her 3-RBI double in game one. She is now up to 12 RBI on the season.

  • Dube pitched all six innings of game one, striking out three hitters.

  • Junior Hannah Wagstaff pitched all six innings of game two and has allowed just three runs through 11 innings of work this season.
