Mariani Sets Single Season RBI Record in Loss to Nichols

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (19-13) welcomed Nichols (16-16) for their third game in three days and despite registering 14 hits and 12 runs, fell 16-12 on Thursday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Nichols scored three runs in the top of the first and in the bottom half, sophomore Bennett Hewett singled and advanced to third before the Bison got out of the inning.
  • After a scoreless inning from graduate student Connor Schmautz, sophomore Myles Fournier and junior Chas Caron each singled, but were left on base.
  • Nichols scored four runs in the third and one in the fourth before junior Michael Salzillo registered an RBI single and senior Dom Mariani drove in a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 8-3.
  • The Bison added two runs in the fifth and in the bottom half, senior Brayden Hollinrake drove in sophomore Cole Camara and Fournier belted a homer to left center as Clark trailed 10-5.
  • Nichols plated four runs in the top of the sixth before Hewett and Mariani homered in back-to-back at-bats as the Bison took a 14-7 advantage into the seventh.
  • After the Bison scored a run in the seventh, Clark plated five runs as first-year Michael Benway and Hewett each drove in runs and Caron, Salzillo, and Hewett all scored in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 15-12.
  • First-year Micah Birnbaum tossed a scoreless ninth after Nichols scored another run in the eighth, but the Cougars were unable to score as they fell 16-12.
Inside the Box Score
  • Hewett registered three hits, three runs, two RBI's, and homered.
  • Mariani and Fournier each homered, with Mariani roping his 10th of the year and Fournier homered for the third straight game.
  • Caron and senior Jake Faulkenham both tallied two hits and scored a run.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Babson for a NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
