WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (14-8, 2-3 NEWMAC) hosted MIT (9-11, 6-1 NEWMAC) for their first of a two-game series on Tuesday afternoon and fell 16-12 from Granger Field.
How it Happened
- After allowing a leadoff triple, junior Jacob Kline retired the next three batters to get out of the inning and again got out of a jam in the second by striking out Eitan Moore to get the third out.
- In the bottom of the second, senior Brayden Hollinrake and sophomore Miles Fournier each reached base before both coming home on a ball hit by senior Alfonso Jalil to give Clark a 2-0 lead.
- After MIT scored a run in the top of the third, Kline forced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and in the bottom half, senior Dom Mariani singled before being left on base as the Cougars held a 2-1 edge.
- Kline tossed a scoreless top of the fourth before Clark exploded for four runs in the bottom half as Jalil, sophomore Bennett Hewett, and Mariani all recorded RBI's to push their lead to 6-1.
- MIT tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth and in the bottom half, Hollinrake and Fournier each singled, but were left on base.
- Senior Matthew Donahue tossed a scoreless sixth before Mariani roped a two-RBI double down the left field line that brought home Hewett and Salzillo to give the Cougars an 8-6 lead.
- The Engineers scored eight runs in the top of the seventh before Mariani belted a three-run homer to left field that scored Salzillo and junior Joseph Winakor as they trailed 14-11.
- Sophomore Robby Roth tossed a scoreless eighth and Fournier singled in the bottom of the eighth, but was left on base.
- After two more MIT runs in the ninth, senior Michael Soares doubled to left field to bring home Salzillo as the Cougars fell 16-12.
Inside the Stats
- Mariani led the team with five hits, seven RBI's, a homer, two doubles, and a run scored.
- Jalil added three RBI's and two hits.
- Salzillo scored four runs, drew two walks, and registered a hit.
- Hewett and Hollinrake each scored two runs and tallied a pair of hits.
- Fournier reached base three times, with two hits and a walk drawn.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Dean to Granger for a non-conference contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
