Baseball Tops Dean 8-6 in Non-Conference Action

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (15-8) welcomed Dean (14-9) to Worcester on Wednesday afternoon and registered an 8-6 victory from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • First-year James Rabbitt tossed a scoreless first inning and in the bottom half both senior Michael Soares and first-year Cole Miller both recorded RBI's to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
  • Rabbitt got out of a second and third jam in the second and junior Chas Caron singled and stole second in the bottom half as they took a 2-0 advantage into the third.
  • Dean scored two runs in the top of the third and after a scoreless fourth from first-year Andrew Mello, Caron stole second in the fourth, but was left on base.
  • Graduate student Connor Schmautz pitched a scoreless fifth and in the bottom half, senior Jake O'Donnell registered an RBI to give Clark a 3-2 advantage.
  • The Bulldogs plated three runs in the top of the sixth before Clark rattled off four runs as senior Dom Mariani, first-year Cole Miller, and senior Nicolo Mainardi each recorded RBI's as the Cougars led 7-5.
  • After Dean scored a run in the seventh, Mariani singled down the right field line to bring home junior Michael Salzillo to push the lead to 8-6.
  • Bruun tossed a scoreless eighth and in the ninth first-year Luke Costello recorded his first save of the season as the Cougars prevailed 8-6.

  • Mariani registered three hits, three runs, and two RBI's.
  • Soares tallied four hits, two doubles, a run, and an RBI.
  • Senior Jake Faulkenham scored two runs and recorded a hit.
  • Salzillo reached base three times and scored a pair of runs.
  • Miller, Mainardi, and O'Donnell each registered RBI's.
  • Mello, Schmautz, Bruun, and Costello combined to pitch 6.0 innings and allowed no earned runs.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field tomorrow when they travel to Southern Maine for a non-conference contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
