Field Hockey Falls in Conference Opener After Third-Quarter Surge from WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University field hockey team (3-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) opened NEWMAC play with a trip down park avenue to take on WPI (2-4, 1-0 NEWMAC). Following a scoreless first half, WPI would find the goal three times in the third quarter to pull away and ultimately win 4-0 at home.

How it Happened 

  • The Engineers earned the first penalty corner of the game in the 3rd minute before generating the first shot on goal in the 5th minute, a shot that was saved away by senior Rachel Reiter. 

  • WPI would fire two more errant shots over the final ten minutes of the first quarter, with the quarter ending scoreless. 

  • Clark would get their offense going in the second, earning two penalty corners before sophomore Sedona Lee put a shot on goal four minutes into the quarter. 

  • WPI would earn their own penalty corner later in the quarter, firing a shot that was blocked before reaching goal. The Cougars would earn one final corner in the final five minutes of the half, but couldn't find a shot as the half ended 0-0. 

  • The Engineers came out strong in the second half, earning a pair of penalty corners before firing a pair of shots on goal that were saved again by Reiter. 

  • The third time would be the charm for the Engineers, as Emma Barton found Violet Westburg for the opening goal of the game six minutes into the second half. 

  • WPI would add to their lead just over a minute later, with Sanidi Waduthanthri assisting Ava Walker to make it 2-0. 

  • Kyra Duane would make it three goals in the quarter, finding the back of the cage off a pass from Lucy Clement. That would be the final shot of the quarter as WPI took a 3-0 lead into the final 15 minutes.

  • The Engineers would take advantage of their first penalty corner in the fourth, with Ella Reeners firing a pass to Madeline Chase at the top of the circle for a fourth goal. 

  • Reiter would make another save, with Lee firing another shot late in the quarter, but that would be the last shot of the game as the final horn sounded with the score at 4-0. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark earned three penalty corners in the effort. 

  • Reiter made four saves in the cage for the Cougars. 

  • Lee fired a pair of shots, including a shot on goal in the second quarter.
