Field Hockey Hold Off Late Raider Run to Secure 3-2 Win

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University field hockey team (5-4) hosted Rivier (3-7) in a non-conference matchup under the lights on Tuesday. The Cougars struck first, adding two goals in the second quarter before adding another in the third and withstanding a late run from the Raiders to secure a 3-2 win at home.

How it Happened

  • After two errant shots from the Raiders, the Cougars fired two shots on goal from first-year Mackenzie Kleefisch and sophomore Katelyn Towne, but both were saved away.
  • Senior Rachel Reiter responded with back-to-back saves late in the quarter to keep the game scoreless heading into the first-quarter break.
  • After a Towne shot on goal to start the second, sophomore Olivia Bass found sophomore Sedona Lee, who buried a shot into the far corner for the opening goal.
  • The goalies combined for three saves over the next couple of minutes, with the last coming from Reiter for her third of the game.
  • Lee then added an assist to her goal, locating Kleefisch to make it 2-0 with just over a minute to play in the half. The score held at the halftime horn.
  • Following an early save from Reiter, Kleefisch put a shot on goal that was steered away.
  • The Raiders then struck for the first time, with Lexi Davies following up on a blocked shot to finish an unassisted goal a minute later.
  • Four minutes later, Lee struck again, finishing an assist from Towne to reextend the lead to two goals.
  • Clark fired four shots on goal over the final minutes, with Reiter saving two attempts at the opposite end as the third quarter ended with Clark leading 3-1.
  • Rivier ramped up the pressure in the fourth, firing three shots on goal over the first 12 minutes of the final quarter.
  • The Raiders finally broke through with two minutes to play, with Davies finding Brianna Spinelli to make it a one-goal game.
  • Rivier had a chance to tie in the final minute, but Reiter made a critical save that held up over the final seconds as the game finished with a 3-2 win for Clark.
