Rebuilding A Program

  • Phillips first became the head coach of Clark in 1996-97, where he was assigned the task of resurrecting a once proud program
  • Over eight years (1996-04), Phillips lead the Cougars to both regional and national prominence
  • Record of 140-77 during this time
  • Four time NEWMAC regular season champions (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003)
  • Back-to-back NCAA National Quarterfinal (Elite Eight) appearances in 2001-2002
  • Built the first men’s basketball dynasty of the NEWMAC era

Return of a Cougar

  • Returned to the head coach position in 2006-07
  • Four conference tournament appearances during this current 11-year span
  • Won the NEWMAC Tournament Championship in 2009-10

  • Five trips to the NCAA Tournament (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010)

  • In 18 seasons at Clark, holds a 251-223 record

Success in 2010

  • Won the NEWMAC Conference Tournament as the fifth-seed
  • Defeated three higher seeds—including top-seeded and nationally-ranked MIT
  • Reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

Win Number 400

  • A 71-70 win over Babson on January 29, 2014 gave Coach Phillips his 400 career win

The AMCAT Years

  • Head Coach of Anna Maria College for 10 seasons (1986-96) before coming to Clark
  • Reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and won a school record 25 games in 1996
  • Overall record of 166-99
  • Six Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season championships
  • Won 20 or more games four times

More Than Athletics

  • 1976 graduate of Assumption College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with a teaching certification in history
  • Received his master’s degree in counseling from Worcester State University 1989
  • Spent 20 years as a teacher and guidance counselor at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Mass.

“Books First – Basketball Second”

  • Active member of the Clark community
  • Created the B1 – B2 clinics, which preach “Books First – Basketball Second”
  • Established a weekly reading program at Woodland Elementary
  • Introduced a math tutoring program at the University Park Campus School
  • For all his work in the community, Phillips received the John Lund Award in 1998 and the Thomas Jefferson Award from Worcester Public Schools in 2012

Family Man

  • Phillips resides in Shrewsbury with his wife Jane. They have two sons, Jeffrey and Jonathan—both Clark University graduates.
