Norton, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's
soccer team remained just shy of first-place Clark University in
the league standings on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons and
Cougars played to a scoreless double-overtime draw during New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at
Mirrione Stadium.
Moving into a three-way tie for second place, Wheaton stands at
4-1-1 in league play and 13-2-1 overall. The Lyons are ranked fifth
in the region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA). Tied for 10th in New England and having not been scored
upon during conference play, Clark remains atop the NEWMAC at 4-0-2
and 8-4-2 overall.
Wheaton held a 23-9 advantage in shots, as the Cougars leaned on
senior goalie Joanna
Clark (Windham, Maine), who came up with a clutch save
in the second overtime to help preserve the shutout. Clark finished
with six stops, while Lyon sophomore keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick,
RI/Wheeler School) made a huge save in the opening half.
Clark's second-overtime stop took place in the 106th minute, as she
slid in front of a shot on the doorstep from Lyon sophomore Emily
Vincunas (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy). Not even
two minutes into the second extra session, Wheaton senior Lyndsey
McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) ripped a shot from the top of
the box that sailed just past the upper right corner of the goal
mouth.
In the first overtime, freshman Cassey Muse (Candia, NH/Central)
had a one-on-one opportunity with Clark before pushing her shot
wide right 30 seconds in, while McManus struck a shot at Clark just
two minutes later.
The hosts held a 9-3 edge in shots in the second half but were
unable to break the stalemate, as a McManus cross along the end
line with a little more than four minutes to play carried across
the box, and Wheaton wasn't able to get off an attempt.
Two minutes prior to that, Cougar senior Kerri
Moy (Newton, Mass.) hit her shot wide left of the
target.
In the opening half, Leddy's diving save on a shot from point-blank
range off the foot of sophomore Erin
Peete (Clinton, Mass.) during the 14th minute denied
the visitors their best scoring opportunity, which came on Clark's
lone corner kick of the day. In the 32nd minute, Muse's apparent
goal was disallowed due to an offsides call.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when they host the final
home game of the regular season with Mount Holyoke visiting at 6
p.m.
