Framingham, Mass. - FSC junior Scott Faria
scored the game winner just over five minutes into overtime to lift
the Framingham State College men's soccer team to a 3-2
non-conference win over Clark University on a rain-soaked Maple
Street Field this afternoon.
With the win, the Rams improve to 7-8-2 on the season, while Clark
ends its regular season at 9-6-1.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute of play as senior
midfielder John
Machado (Bristol, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal.
Clark's lead would not last long as it took the Rams two minutes to
tie the score. Freshman Chris Wilkins gathered a rebound in front
of the net and knocked it home for his second goal of the
season.
The Rams outshot Clark 20-14 on the day, but it was the Cougars who
were able to capitalize on a scoring chance first in the second
half to pull ahead. In the 66th minute, Mike
Trobagis (Acton, Mass.) collected a loose ball in the
box and deposited it in the back of the net giving Clark a 2-1
lead.
The visitors would maintain their lead until the closing minutes
when the Rams were able to generate back to back corners. After the
second corner, Brunno Goncalves sent a cross into the box that Rob
O'Doherty knocked home to tie the game and force overtime.
In the extra session, the Rams continued their offensive pressure
and five minutes in Peter Maranto was able to connect with Faria
for the game winner.
Junior Greg Halle made seven saves in the game and picked up the
win in net for the Rams, while Ryan
King (Brimfield, Mass.) also made seven saves in a
losing effort for the Cougars.
The Rams return to action on Saturday as the close out the regular
season at Fitchburg State at 11 a.m., while the Cougars await the
results of this weekend's NEWMAC games to see who they will face in
the NEWMAC Tournament next week.
