Worcester, Mass. - WPI extended its
school-record start with a pair of victories to claim the program's
sixth Worcester City Volleyball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at
Clark University's Kneller Athletic Center.
The Engineers improved to 10-0 following a 3-1 win over Assumption
and a 3-0 win over NEWMAC rival Clark in the championship
match.
Tournament MVP, freshman Bailey Sarber, dominated play, totaling a
combined 31 kills and 28 digs.

Behind 11 kills from sophomore standout Kristin
McGinty (Vail, Colo.), the host Cougars cruised to a 3-0
win over Worcester State in the 2009 Worcester City
Tournaments first match of the day. Senior Emily
Visone (West Hempstead, N.Y.) added a team-high 13 digs,
while sophomore setter Nichole
Lopez (Alameda, Calif.) chipped in with 24
assists.
Clark found themselves on the ropes in game one, trailing 19-11 to
the Lancers before they rallied to tie the score at 23-23, and
eventually take a 25-23 decision. They captured the next two games,
25-18 and 25-16 to advance to the championship match.
WPI 3, Assumption 1
Freshman Bailey Sarber's (Westerly, R.I.) 16 kills and 15 digs
propelled the Engineers into the championship match with a 3-1 win
over Assumption. With the win, WPI improves to 9-0 extending the
best start in program history. Becca Holmberg (Worcester, Mass.)
also shined in the victory, posting nine kills and a game-high 16
digs. The Greyhounds were led by 11 kills apiece from Jessica
Haller (Meriden, Conn.) and Aimee Drainville (Rockville, R.I.).
Haller added 14 kills, while Kelly Bluemenauer (Islip Terrace,
N.Y.) handed out 31 assists to go with her nine digs.
Assumption 3, Worcester State 0
Aimee Drainville had a team-high tying 11 kills as the Greyhounds
wrapped up third place in this year's event with an easy 3-0
(25-17, 25-22, 25-18) win over Worcester State. The Lancers were
led by Lauren Saylor's five kills and 11 digs and Brittany
Stoddard's 12 assists and five kills. WSC falls to 1-6 on the
season, while the Greyhounds improve to 1-4.
WPI 3, Clark 0
Sarber generated 15 kills on .429 hitting as the Engineers cruised
to the title with a convincing 3-0 win. She added 13 digs and two
service aces to her totals, while setter Maria Rangel handed out 29
assists Becca Holmberg chipped in with six kills and six digs.
Kristin McGinity (eight kills) and Amira
Tranchell (Falmouth, Mass.) (seven kills) led the way
for the Cougars who were in search of back-to-back tournament
titles for the first time since 1991-92.
