Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore Trevor Hendry (Waterford, Conn.) headed home a pair of goals,
including the game-winner at the 84:10 mark to push the host Clark
University men's soccer squad past Rhode Island College in a hotly
contested matchup on Granger Field on Wednesday evening.
The win for the Cougars is their fourth straight as they improve to
4-1 on the season, while the Anchormen remain winless at 0-4-1.
Things were physical right from the outset as the two teams
accumulated 22 fouls and three yellow cards in the first half
alone.
The match remained scoreless until midway through the second half
when Tim Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) set up Hendry for
the game's first goal at 63:25.
Rhode Island College would respond, however, getting the game-tying
tally when Joshua Souza served in a free kick from the right that
Kory Pacheco blasted by Clark keeper Ryan King
(Brimfield, Mass.) to knot the score at one all.
The tie would be short lived, however, as less than a minute later,
Doenmez found Hendry on the left side of the goal and he banged
home his third career goal.
For the match, the teams had a combined 41 fouls and ten cards -
including two red cards.
The two assists for Doenmez give him a team-leading four helpers so
far this season and mark the fourth straight contest in which he
has registered at least one point.
King, meanwhile, continues to impress in goal, making several key
stops and finishing with three saves, while RIC netminder, Andrew
Hogan only recorded one save, allowing two goals.
The four-game unbeaten streak for the Cougars is the third time in
the last two seasons that they have put together an unbeaten streak
of at least four games.
Clark returns to action on Saturday when they open the NEWMAC
portion of their schedule with a 12 noon start against Babson.
