Worcester, Mass. - Senior John
Machado (Bristol, Conn.) scored the game-winning
goal - his first of the season and just the second of his
career - as Clark withstood a late rally from visiting Worcester
State to take a 2-1 win in men's soccer action on Wednesday
afternoon at Granger Field.
In addition to Machado's heroics, freshman Gianluca
Ranallo (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had a goal and an
assist.
The Cougars led 1-0 for most of the match until Lancer Dan Anthony
(Leominster, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 66th minute to
knot the score.
Clark wasted little time regaining the lead as Ranallo served in a
free kick to Machado who beat Worcester State netminder Evan Wilga
(Dudley, Mass.) for the go-ahead score.
Ranallo put the Cougars ahead in the early moments of the contest
on a header off a feed from classmate Nick
Perracchio (Willington, Conn.) a little more than four
minutes in.
The Cougars, who out-shot the Lancers 22-4, including an 11-1 edge
in the first half, had several scoring opportunities awry
throughout the match.
Machado hit the left post on a low shot to the left in the 38th
minute and then on two occasions Clark hit the crossbar - once by
Mike
Trobagis (Acton, Mass.) and the other by Tim
Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.).
Wilga turned away five shots for WSC, while Ryan
King (Brimfield, Mass.) didnt have to make any
saves to record his sixth win of the season.
The Cougars improve to 6-3 on the season with the win, while the
Lancers' winless streak hit six matches as they fall to 1-7-2
overall.
Clark returns to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. home start
against Springfield.
