Season Ends In 7-0 Quarterfinal Round Loss

Box Score

Rehoboth, Mass. – Wheaton College junior Emily Asack scored a school-record five goals and the Lyons knocked off visiting Clark, 7-0, in the quarterfinal round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, the Lyons advance to the semifinal round on Saturday at Babson where they will face the tournament's No. 2 seed, MIT.

Clark, meanwhile, ends their season at 11-7 overall and in the opening round of the tournament for the second season in a row.

Wheaton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, getting a score from sophomore Alex Smith at the 6:48 mark off of a penalty corner.

Asack notched her first tally in the 23rd minute then added another unassisted goal in the waning seconds of the first half to give the Lyons a 3-0 halftime edge.

Things stayed the same in the second half as Asack put Wheaton on the board in the 41st minute with help from Emily Chick.

After Carmela Luzi got in on the scoring act for the Lyons in the 49th minute, Chick set up Asack again at 49:32, making the score 6-0.

Asack then etched her name in atop the single game scoring list with an unassisted marker in the 65th minute.

Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) made six saves in goal for the Cougars, who were outshot 15-7.

Despite the disappointing loss, the future of the program remains bright. Clark will welcome back eight of its top nine scorers from this season back to the squad in 2011.
