Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore sensation
Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) scored a
career-high five goals, igniting a Clark offense that registered a
season-high in goals en route to a 13-9 win over visiting
UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon on Granger Field.
The Cougars have now won back-to-back games for the first time in
364 days and with their 2-3 record have already equaled their win
total from a season ago.
Down 2-1 in the early part of the first quarter, Clark scored the
game's next six goals to take a commanding 7-2 lead into the final
minutes of the first half. Johnson found the back of the net twice
during the run as did Chris Adams (Bradford,
N.H.), while Garrett McAdam (Portland, Maine) and
Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) had the other
scores.
The Beacons finally got another goal, this one of the unassisted
variety from Al Craven, with 1:52 left before intermission, but
McAdam fired a shot that whistled by UMass-Boston goalie Jake
Gostanian with seven seconds left for another Cougar score before
the half.
Johnson scored the only goal of the third period in the first
minute of action, making the score 9-3 heading into the fourth.
The Beacons collected the game's next two goals before Johnson
scored again. A Ryan Pollack score was quickly followed up by
another Johnson score and then goals from Roche and Adams seemed to
put UMass-Boston away. The Beacons, however, scored the games
next three goals before time ran out, giving the Cougars the 13-9
win.
Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) was strong in
net for Clark for the second straight contest, turning back nine
UMass-Boston shots, while Gostanian made ten saves in defeat.
In addition to Johnson's performance, Adams and Roche each had
three goals and Danny Heelan (Avon, Conn.) handed
out three assists.
John Canty paced the Beacon offense with four goals, while Al
Craven recorded three tallies.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they host
Plymouth State at 5:00, while UMass-Boston visits Emerson on the
same day.
