Worcester, Mass. - Seniors Lauren Blake (Oakland, Maine) and Chelsea Proulx
(Franklin, N.H.) both reached career milestones and Clark improved
to 21-9 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Amherst College on
Tuesday afternoon on O'Brien Field.
Blake surpassed 200 career hits with her single in the fourth
inning of the Cougars' 8-0 win in game one and Proulx collected her
100th career hit in the 7-0 victory in game two.
Blake's 203 career hits are good for third on the school's all-time
list, while Proulx is the 18th player in school history and the
third this season to reach the century mark in hits.
In twinbill opener, Sarah Carter (Worcester,
Mass.) tossed her ninth complete game of the season, improving to
11-3, while scattering just five hits and allowing no walks. Clark
jumped on Amherst starter Alex Chang-Warren early, scoring three
runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Darcey Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, Calif.) RBI single to center
and a Proulx bases loaded walk.
The Cougars wrapped up the game in the fifth plating five runs,
with Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) providing an
RBI double, Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.) and
Blake RBI singles and Melissa Traft (Milton,
Mass.) and Kurashige-Elliott sacrifice flies.
The nightcap started out in a similar fashion with the Cougars
getting two runs in the first on a two-run double by
Kurashige-Elliott.
Clark tacked on four more runs in the fourth on a Proulx RBI
single, a Blake two-run single and a Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.) bases loaded walk.
The Cougars added another run in the sixth when Blake reached on an
error and came around to score on a Mel Melkonian
(Worcester, Mass.) RBI double.
Freshman Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) tossed six
innings of five-hit ball, striking out one and walking none to
improve her record to 8-3 overall. Classmate Kelly Schroder (Auburn, Mass.) tossed the final inning, allowing
one hit.
Kurashige-Elliott went 3-for-3 in the second game, falling a home
run shy of the cycle, while Blake had four hits and two runs and
two RBI in the doubleheader.
Designated player Christina Anderson had two hits for Amherst in
game two and was the lone player for the Lord Jeffs to have more
than two hits in the two games combined.
Clark has four regular season games remaining with Friday's
doubleheader at Babson on Friday and Saturday's home twinbill
against Wheaton.
