Cougars Bow Out To Babson, 9-1

New London, Conn. - Babson senior Danielle Liska allowed just a run on four hits while striking out eight and third-seeded Babson scored six runs in the second en route to a 9-1, five-inning, win over fifth-seeded Clark in an elimination game in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference softball tournament.

The Cougars season, which started off at 10-1, ends at 23-13, while the Beavers will continue play this afternoon at 4 p.m. in an elimination game against the winner of Wellesley-Wheaton.

Babson scored twice in the first as the first four batters reached. Freshman Jaclyn Enos led off with a single and classmate Catie Funk doubled. Sophomore Jessica Pashos drove in a run and reached on an error before sophomore Nicole Latini added an RBI single for the 2-0 lead.

Pashos and Latini had back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded to begin the six-run second to chase Clark starter junior Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.). Junior Jess Winer greeted freshman Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) with a two-run double before the Beavers added a run on an error and another on a double steal to take an 8-0 lead.

Sophomore Stefanie Kettenacker (Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.) broke up the shutout with a solo homer to centerfield with two outs in the fourth.

Babson added an unearned run in the fourth to increase its lead to 9-1.

Liska walked two to go with her eight strikeouts to improve to 13-7 on the season. Carter (11-7) took the loss for Clark as she was charged with seven runs, five earned in 1 2/3 innings.

Latini and Winer each had two hits and two RBI, while Funk added two hits in the win for Babson.

The heralded Clark class of 2010 saw their careers come to an end with several of them placing high on the career hits list. Darcey Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, Calif.) (131) is seventh, Melissa Traft (Milton, Mass.) (130) is eighth, and Lauren Blake (Oakland, Maine) by courtesy of her hit today, moves into sole possession of second place with 209 career hits.
