Worcester, Mass. - Junior Danny Heelan (Avon, Conn.) scored three goals and added three
assists pushing host Clark to their fourth straight victory with a
10-5 win over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the Pilgrim
League opener for both teams on Saturday evening on Granger
Field.
The winning streak for the Cougars pushes their overall record to
4-3 surpassing their win total from a season ago and gives them
their most wins in a season since 2008. The Buccaneers, meanwhile
slip to 1-6 overall and have dropped two straight since picking up
their first win back on March 27.
Clark started the game off slow and fell behind 1-0 less than a
minute into the game following Connor Burke's unassisted tally. The
Buccaneers registered another goal with a little less than nine
minutes left in the first half when Parker Simon set up Kyle
Scannell for a 2-0 Mass-Maritime edge.
The Cougars then scored two of the games next three goals as
Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) and Heelan found
the back of the net sandwiched around a Michael Lambros score to
make the game 3-2 at halftime.
Clark then took advantage of several man-up opportunities, scoring
eight second half goals, six of which came when they were on the
man advantage.
After Heelan found Chris Adams (Bradford, N.H.)
to even the score in the early part of the third period,
Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) gave the Cougars
their first lead with an unassisted even-man score.
Simon tied the game for the Buccaneers a short time later, but
Garrett McAdam (Portland, Maine) scored off of a
rebound as time expired in the third period to give Clark a 5-4
lead going into the fourth.
Clark then outscored Mass-Maritime 5-1 in the final frame, as
Adams (2), Heelan (2) and McAdam all registered goals in the last
9:25 of the game, four of which were man-up scores.
Buccaneer goalie James Hitchings turned back 18 shots, while
Cougar netminder Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury,
Conn.) made five saves to earn his fourth win of the season.
In addition to Heelan, McAdam had a goal and two assists, and
Adams registered a three-goal night.
Clark will look to extend its winning streak with next Saturday's
7 p.m. start against Lasell.
