New London, Conn. - Coast Guard sophomore
pitcher Hayley Feindel threw a pair of shutouts, allowing just
three hits while striking out 23 batters, leading the host Bears,
ranked third in New England, to a pair of victories over Clark -
1-0 and 9-0 in five innings - in New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action.
The Cougars who entered the showdown on a five-game winning streak
and ranked fourth in New England, dropped to 16-6 overall and 6-4
in conference play.
Feindel fired a one-hitter in the opener, allowing just a double in
the third to senior Lauren Blake (Oakland,
Maine).
Junior Amanda Frederick's RBI double drove home pinch runner Anna
Funk in the fifth with the only run of the game. Megan Cook led off
the fifth with a single, Funk pinch ran, sophomore Maddie Buchert
bunted her to third before Frederick's hit.
Junior Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) (9-1)
allowed just five hits for the Cougars, but took the loss, her
first of the season.
In game two, senior Carin Sweeney's three-run double highlighted a
four-run third as the Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead and Buchert's
two-run double in the fifth ended the game due to the eight-run
rule.
Sweeney, Buchert and Frederick each had two hits in the game two
win for the Bears, who improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the
NEWMAC.
Feindel threw a two-hitter in the nightcap, both singles and struck
out 12 while not walking a batter to improve to 14-4 on the
season.
Sophomore Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.) (1-3)
took the loss in game two for the Cougars.
Clark will look to snap its first two-game losing streak of the
season on Tuesday when they host cross-town rival Worcester State
in a twinbill that begins at 3:00 p.m.
