Clark Settles For Tie With Coast Guard

New London, Conn. - Junior Anthony Walker's goal in the 83rd minute tied the game as Coast Guard and Clark played to a 1-1 tie in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer game.

Clark is now to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play while Coast Guard is 3-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in NEWMAC action.

The Cougars had the better of the play in the opening minutes but did not generate any quality opportunities.

With the wind at their back, Clark went ahead in the 20th minute, off a Coast Guard corner, the Clark defense blocked a potential goal and countered down the field. The Cougars gained their own corner, Clark served a driven ball in the box and a failure to clear by the CGA defense resulted in a hand ball in the box.

Baran Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) converted the penalty kick with a shot in the corner for a 1-0 lead.

In the 83rd minute freshman Kyle Grell served a beautiful driven diagonal ball into the box that Walker calmly headed past the keeper to tie the game.

The Bears had a chance to take the lead just four minutes later as junior Brett Godiksen had an open look from the 18 for the Bears, but his shot sailed just over the bar.

In the overtimes, each team had chances, and with one second left in the match, Clark knocked a shot just over the bar from 12 yards out.

Senior Chris Tarbell had three saves for Coast Guared while Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) had four for Clark. The Cougars outshot Coast Guard 16-15.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday with a road trip to Worcester State.
