1-0 Loss Shuts Door On Cougars' Postseason Hopes

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting MIT goal a goal from Zach Kabelac (Potomac, Md.) in the 35th minute and the defense made sure it held up as the Engineers secured a 1-0 win in New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday morning.

The win for MIT pushes their record to 7-6 overall but more importantly locks up a bid to the postseason conference tournament that begins in early November. Where they will be positioned in the tournament has yet to be determined.

Clark, meanwhile, misses out on the postseason tournament for the second straight season and now sits at 7-6-2 overall and 0-4-1 in league play.

The Engineers controlled play for most of the match, peppering the Cougars with 21 shots – 12 of which were turned back by Clark netminder Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.).

Kabelac's team-leading seventh marker of the season came at the 34:52 mark off touches from Ben Lewis (West Hartford, Conn.) and Nick Diamantoni (Belle Mead, N.J.).

The Engineers had opportunities to increase their lead in the second half but some spectacular stops by King – including a diving deflection on an Alexander Dago (Chicago, Ill.) attempt that still banged off the post kept the Cougars hope's alive.

Clark put pressure on the MIT defense in the final minutes but failed to come up a scoring chance.

MIT will close out their regular season with a home contest against Wentworth on Monday and then a road trip to Wheaton next Saturday, while the Cougars host Plymouth State on Wednesday and then travel to Babson on Saturday, October 29.
