Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University got the game-winning goal early in the second overtime and escaped with a 3-2 win over visiting Mount Holyoke in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 6-8-2 overall and secure a spot in the upcoming NEWMAC postseason tournament which begins on Tuesday, November 1. The Lyons, meanwhile slip to 4-10 and 2-6 in league play.
The teams combined to score four goals in the first half but neither team found the back of the net in the second 45 minutes, forcing overtime.
Clark came out aggressive in the first extra session, firing several excellent scoring opportunities on goal, but each time Mount Holyoke netminder Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn.) was up for the challenge, turning back three shots in less than a minute.
The second extra stanza was less than three minutes old when Janelle Pasternack (North Brookfield, Mass.) sent a ball to Hannah Moriarty (Millbury, Mass.) that she floated into the upper left corner that was just outside the reach of Randall's outstretched arms at 102:24.
Things actually started out well for the Lyons, as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) blasted home her third goal of the season with help from Mary Cooke (Okemos, Mich.) at 17:05.
Clark got the equalizer in the 35th minute when Hana Chamoun (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) sent a cross to Afra Danai (Amherst, Mass.) that she buried for her team-leading sixth marker of the year.
Mount Holyoke answered back almost immediately, as Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H.) took advantage of a bobbled ball by Cougar keeper Audrey Eisemann (Worcester, Mass.) and notched her first of the season.
Clark wasn't as fast as Mount Holyoke at answering a goal but they did when Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass.) setup Jennifer O'Rourke (Somerset, Mass.) at 40:30.
The Cougars were in control of the game statistically, posting a 28-6 edge in shots and a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Randall turned back ten shots for the Lyons, while Eisemann needed to only make one save in goal for Clark to earn the victory.
Back into the postseason tournament following a hiatus in 2010, the Cougars are locked into the No. 5 seed.
Clark will wrap up its regular season with a home contest next Saturday against Wellesley, while Mount Holyoke steps out of conference on Wednesday to play host to MCLA.
