Wheaton Denies Cougars Again, 3-2

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Wheaton College scored a pair of second half goals less than three minutes apart to lift them to a thrilling 3-2 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Sunday afternoon.

With the win the Lyons improve to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in league play keeps them in the hunt for one of the remaining spots in the upcoming postseason tournament.

Clark, meanwhile, has dropped three straight games and five of their last six to slip to 8-5 overall following their 7-1 start. Now at 2-5 in conference play, the Cougars have been eliminated for postseason contention.

Today's contest started out in fine fashion for Clark as Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) blasted home her 24th goal of the season at the 17:50 mark, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Wheaton answered back a little less than eight minutes later when Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) set up Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine) for her seventh marker of the year.

The second half was less than five minutes old when this time it was Chick playing tablesetter, leading to Emily Asack's (Stoughton, Mass.) third goal in the last two games, making the score 2-1.

Gillian Mann (Burlington, Vt.) took advantage of a loose ball out in front of the Clark cage and smacked home an unassisted marker at the 41:53 mark.

Clark trimmed the lead to 3-2 when Melkonian took a pass from Erin Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.) and beat Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.) at 53:05.

The Cougars had a great opportunity to tie the game with less than five minutes to go when Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) and Melkonian were streaking down field with only one defender between them but they were unable to connect on the give and go.

Massengill was fantastic in goal for the Lyons, turning back nine shots, including several spectacular stops where she went to the ground to make the play.

Clark held small advantages in shots (11-8) and penalty corners (11-7).

Wheaton will close out their regular season on Saturday in a non-league affair against Union, while the Cougars will play at Framingham State on Tuesday.
