Top-Seeded Springfield Ends Cougars' Run, 3-0

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – Top-seeded and host Springfield College continued its march towards a second straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament title with a convincing 3-0 win over fifth-seeded Clark University in women's soccer semifinal action on Saturday afternoon.

The win for the Pride (14-3-1) is their tenth straight, tying a school record for consecutive victories set back in 1991 and puts them into the NEWMAC Championship game for the fourth consecutive season.

Clark, meanwhile, sees its season come to an end at 7-9-3 after making their second conference semifinals appearance in the last four years.

After becoming the first lower seed to earn a victory in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament since 2008, the Cougars were unable to continue their inspired play.

Clark actually had the game's first scoring chance when Janelle Pasternack (North Brookfield, Mass.) fired a strong shot on goal in the 11th minute but Springfield keeper Erin Greenstein (Framingham, Mass.) turned back her attempt. Unfortunately for the Cougars, that attempt was their best scoring opportunity all game long.

The Pride got their first goal in the 21st minute when Katie Mantie (Wallingford, Conn.) slipped a pass to Jackie Moscardelli (Weymouth, Mass.) that she snuck past an outstretched Audrey Eisemann (Worcester, Mass.) for a 1-0 Springfield lead.

Things seemed to be heading into halftime with the 1-0 score but Karleigh Bradbury (South Portland, Maine) gathered a loose ball inside the box and fired a rocket past Eisemann for a 2-0 lead at 44:09.

Amber Thornton (Troy, N.Y.) capped the game's scoring with her unassisted tally in the 76th minute on a shot from 30 yards out that banged off of the far left post and then into the net.

Greenstein needed to make just three saves for Springfield to register her 12th shutout of the season, while Eisemann, who played extremely well in her own right, made six stops for Clark, who was outshot 17-4.

The Pride will host the winner of the Wheaton-MIT semifinal on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament on the line.
