Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman attackman Jeffery Wasson (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored a career-high four goals to lead Clark University past the University of Massachusetts Boston men's lacrosse team, 10-4, Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston.
With the decision, the Cougars improve to 2-4 while the Beacons drop to 1-3.
Clark dominated possession over the opening 15 minutes of the contest and took a 1-0 lead when junior attackman Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) found the net on a pass from junior attackman Phil Winslow (Providence, R.I.).
At 8:16 of the second period, UMass Boston freshmen attackmen Peyton McKechnie and John Perro hooked up, and McKechnie tied the game, 1-1.
However, the Cougars proceeded to post six unanswered tallies over the remainder of the quarter to take a commanding 7-1 lead at halftime.
Wasson notched three of his four scores over that span along with Johnson, senior attackman Eugene Arsenault (South Portland, Maine) and freshman midfielder Tim Day (Hallowell, Maine). Johnson added an assist during the barrage, and senior midfielder Danny Heelan (Avon, Conn.) picked up a pair of helpers.
The Beacons managed the only score of the third quarter and it came with just 22 seconds left in the frame. Freshman attackman Tommy Petitti buried a pass from junior midfielder Pat Driscoll to cut into the Clark lead, 7-2.
Riding the momentum from the late tally in the closing seconds of the third, UMass Boston struck for a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Perro buried an unassisted score and then Pettiti added his second goal on a pass from freshman attackman Dean Driscoll just 65 seconds later at 13:10 to pull within striking distance, 7-4.
The Cougars, led by Arsenault, slammed the door on the Beacons rally with three goals to put the game away. Arsenault assisted on tallies by Winslow and Wasson and then added his team-leading tenth goal of the season with 6:26 remaining.
In net, Clark freshman goalkeeper Kevin Ranta (Beverly, Mass.) played the first half and only had to make two saves to earn the victory. Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) came on in relief to make eight stops for the visitors. For UMass Boston, junior goalkeeper Anthony Fitti played 52:50 of the game and made nine stops in a losing effort.
The Beacons return to action on Thursday, March 31 when they host Emerson College in a 3:00 p.m. non-conference matchup while the Cougars host Plymouth State University Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
