Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. – For the second day in a row, Clark got tremendous starting pitching from sophomore Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) and senior Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) and the Cougars collected a pair of shutouts – first knocking off Wilmington (Ohio), 1-0 and then Eastern Nazarene, 7-0 on Tuesday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic.
In addition to the remarkable pitching outings by the Clark starters, freshman Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) provided a great deal of the offense with a pair of homeruns and five RBI.
The day's first game evolved into a pitching duel between Meuse and Quaker junior Kylie Ford, who combined to allow just nine hits and strike out 14 batters.
Clark got the lone run of the contest when Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) singled to open the sixth inning. She was sacrificed over to second by Erin Murphy (Boxborough, Mass.) and came around to score on a base hit by freshman Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.).
Meuse was in control throughout, striking out eight without allowing a walk or a baserunner past second base to earn her second consecutive win.
Carter also picked up her second win of the season following a two-hit shutout of the Crusaders in the doubleheader nightcap.
Amatucci blasted both of her homeruns in the win and three other Cougars had two hits each as Clark racked up 11 hits in the 7-0 win.
Melkonian and Chunis both got on base in the top of the first and Amatucci put the Cougars up 3-0 with one swing of the bat.
Clark was back at it in the fifth as Melkonian drove in a run with a single and Heather Figula (Brick, N.J.) pushed another run across the plate with a sacrifice fly.
While the offense was putting runs on the scoreboard, Carter was holding Eastern Nazarene from doing the same. She retired the first 11 Crusader batters she faced before yielding a single with two outs in the fourth.
The Cougars capped the game in the seventh when Chunis walked to lead off the inning and then Amatucci sent a blast to right field for her second homer of the game.
In addition to Amatucci, Melkonian (2-for-4, 2 runs scored) Stefanie Kettenacker (Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.) (2-for-4), and freshman Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) (2-for-2) all had excellent days at the plate. Chunis, meanwhile, reached base four times with a hit and three walks.
Winners of four straight contests, Clark (4-2) will play two games on Wednesday. The Cougars will face Drew University at 1:00 p.m. and then Anna Maria at 3:00 p.m.
