Clark Swept Aside In Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Orlando, Fla. – For the second time this season, Clark University was swept in a softball doubleheader – this time dropping a 7-4 decision to Drew University and then a 4-3 nightcap loss to Worcester-area rival Anna Maria.

The Cougars struggled defensively in the twinbill, committing seven errors in the two games, including five in the loss to Drew.

In the first game of the day, the Rangers scored four runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. Clark answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth on a three-run home run to center by Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.).

Drew then scored a run in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth – all unearned to take a 7-3 lead. The Cougars moved closer in the top of the seventh on a leadoff homerun by Katherine Tutela (Dalton, Mass.), making the score 7-4.

Clark then loaded the bases with one out after base hits by Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.), Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.) and Stefanie Kettenacker (Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.), but Ranger starter Adriana Durso was able to induce a pair of groundouts to end the game.

The Cougars banged out 12 hits, including a career-best 4-for-4 day from Coakley and three more from Melkonian. Kettenacker, meanwhile, went 2-for-5 from her leadoff spot.

Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) gave up three earned runs while striking out three in the loss.

Game two, looked to be headed into the win column for Clark before the AMCATS scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to steal a 4-3 win.

The Cougars took the early edge in the third on an Erin Murphy (Boxborough, Mass.) RBI single that scored Melkonian.

Anna Maria evened the game in the fifth on an Emily Nugent groundout.

Clark then moved ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, setting the stage for the AMCAT comeback.

Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for the Cougars, tossing a complete game six-hitter, allowing three earned runs while striking out four.

Clark will look to return to the win column on Thursday with a pair of games slated to start at 9:00 a.m.
