Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Freshman pitcher Allison Baker (Orange, Conn.) tossed an eight hitter in game one and then combined with Lesley Warn (Portland, Maine) to twirl a one-hit shutout in game two as visiting Wheaton swept a doubleheader by scores of 8-1 and 5-0 over Clark in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Saturday afternoon.
The two wins for the Lyons extends their winning streak to four straight and improves their record to 17-12 overall and 8-6 in league play. Clark, meanwhile, who entered the weekend having won ten of its last 12 games, has now dropped four straight and now sit at 14-12 and 6-6 in NEWMAC action.
Game one saw Wheaton jump out to a 2-0 lead after three innings, highlighted by Katy Salka's (Ayer, Mass.) run scoring double in the third.
The Lyons were at it again in the fourth with a pair of runs on RBI hits by Rachel Merrick (Methuen, Mass.) and Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.), making the score 4-0.
A Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) RBI in the fifth bumped the lead to 5-0 and then Wheaton added three more in the sixth. The first came on a Rocha sacrifice fly and the next on Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass.) triple. She came around to score on a wild pitch, upping the Lyon edge to 8-0.
Clark finally got on the board in the sixth when Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) scored on a single to right by Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.).
Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for the Cougars, scattering 13 hits and yielding eight runs, seven of which were earned.
The second game saw the Lyons take an early lead as Roy blasted a Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) offering high and deep over the center field fence to lead off the second inning. An unearned run on the third inning gave Wheaton a 2-0 lead.
Baker, meanwhile, was in total control, retiring 13 of the first 14 batters she faced before Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded the Cougars only hit of the game - a double to right centerfield. Unfazed, Baker retired the final two batters she faced to end the scoring threat.
Salka provided some insurance when she led off the sixth inning with a towering blast to right field line that hugged the line but sailed high over the fence for her third homerun of the season.
Wheaton tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh and Warn, who came into the game in the sixth, recorded the final six outs to pick up the save.
Salka was the hitting star of game two, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a homerun, while Rocha and Roy had two hits each.
Meuse, who gave up ten hits and three earned runs, falls to 7-5 on the season for Clark, while Baker moves to 12-6 following wins in each contest.
The Cougars will look to return to the winning column on Friday with a doubleheader against MIT. Wheaton, meanwhile, heads to Providence, Rhode Island, tomorrow night for a rescheduled non-conference game at Rhode Island College at 7:00 p.m.
